The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) is boosting India’s energy storage capacity with the approval of two more hydro pumped storage projects (PSP) with a total capacity of 2,500 megawatts (MW).
In a statement, the Ministry of Power said the two projects, which are located in Maharashtra, are the 1,500 MW Bhavali PSP being developed by JSW Energy Ltd., and 1,000 MW Bhivpuri PSP being developed by Tata Power Co. Ltd.
The facilities will provide a total storage capacity of more than 15 gigawatt hours.
The project developers have committed to accelerating the commissioning process and aim to complete these PSPs within 44 to 46 months.
Last month, CEA also cleared the 600 MW Upper Indravati in Odisha being developed by OHPC Ltd, and the 2,000 MW Sharavathy in Karnataka being developed by KPCL.
CEA aims to approve at least two PSPs per month throughout the current year. For the 2024-2025 period, the agency has set a target of approving 15 PSPs with a total capacity of 25,500 MW. Of this, 4 PSPs, totaling 5,100 MW

The Ministry of Power announced that the 1,500 MW Bhavali PSP by JSW Energy Ltd. and the 1,000 MW Bhivpuri PSP by Tata Power Co. Ltd. have been approved. Together, these facilities will provide a total storage capacity of over 15 gigawatt hours.
The project developers have pledged to expedite the commissioning process and aim to complete the PSPs within 44 to 46 months.
In addition to these latest approvals, CEA also cleared the 600 MW Upper Indravati PSP in Odisha and the 2,000 MW Sharavathy PSP in Karnataka last month.
