BEML has introduced India's first 60-ton electric dump truck, the BH60-EV. The public-sector equipment manufacturer announced the vehicle on Wednesday, calling it a first for the country in this payload class.

The BH60-EV is designed for open-cast mining, where haul trucks run day and night moving ore and overburden. Diesel is the usual fuel. Electric haulage cuts that out at the point of use.

BEML builds mining and construction equipment, rail coaches, and defence gear. Its trucks already work in Coal India mines and other large projects. The company has been under pressure to lower emissions from its product line as buyers face stricter environmental norms.

Why 60 tons matters

Sixty tons is a mid-range payload. Not the giant 240-ton monsters used in some overseas mines, but big enough to matter in Indian open-cast operations. The size fits typical bench heights and haul road widths at many Indian mines.

Going electric at this size is harder than it sounds. Batteries are heavy. Haul trucks need high torque for steep grades and fast cycle times. Charging infrastructure at remote mine sites is scarce. BEML hasn't said how long the truck runs on a charge or what charging setup it needs.

The company also hasn't disclosed pricing or delivery timelines. That leaves open questions about whether mine operators will adopt it at scale.

A growing electric haulage push

Mining companies worldwide are testing electric and hybrid haul trucks. Some use trolley assist, where trucks draw power from overhead lines on uphill stretches. Others run on batteries alone. Each approach has trade-offs in cost, range, and infrastructure.

In India, Coal India has been piloting electric vehicles and renewable power at its mines. The country's climate goals push heavy industry to cut diesel use. Mining is a small share of national emissions but a visible one, with fleets of trucks burning fuel around the clock.

BEML's move follows its earlier work on electric and hybrid products, including battery-powered buses and a hydrogen fuel-cell bus prototype. The company has said it wants to grow its clean-energy portfolio.

What's next

The BH60-EV will need field trials before any large orders. Mine operators will watch for uptime, battery life, and whether the truck can handle the dust, heat, and vibration of Indian mines.

BEML hasn't named a launch customer or a trial site. The announcement is a product debut, not a fleet order.

For now, the BH60-EV stands as a marker. India can build a 60-ton electric haul truck. Whether it can sell one at scale is a different question.
