Blackbuck EV launches ELON 3X, India's first 15-metre multi-axle electric sleeper coach
The Bengaluru-based electric bus maker has unveiled a 15-metre multi-axle sleeper coach, a first for the Indian market, as the long-distance electric bus segment heats up.
Blackbuck EV has unveiled the ELON 3X, which it calls India's first 15-metre multi-axle electric sleeper coach. The announcement was reported by Motorindia on 3 November 2026.
The vehicle is aimed at the long-distance intercity bus market, where sleeper coaches dominate overnight travel on trunk routes. A 15-metre multi-axle layout is longer than the standard 12-metre coaches that most Indian operators run, and the extra length usually translates into more berths per trip.
Why the length matters
Operators on busy corridors count seats and berths per kilometre, not just range. A longer coach lets an operator spread the cost of a driver, tolls and charging time across more passengers. Multi-axle designs also help carry the extra weight of a large battery pack without overloading a single rear axle.
Blackbuck EV has not disclosed the battery capacity, claimed range, charging time or the number of berths in the ELON 3X. Pricing and a launch timeline are also under wraps. The company's release focused on the vehicle's segment-first positioning rather than its specifications.
The electric sleeper coach space in India is still thin. Most electric buses on Indian roads are city or staff-transport models with short daily duty cycles, where depot charging is easy. Overnight intercity runs are harder: they need bigger batteries, reliable highway charging and a schedule that leaves room for a top-up en route.
What's still unanswered
- Battery capacity and claimed range per charge
- Number of sleeper berths and seating layout
- Charging time and connector standard
- Price and expected delivery date
Those numbers will decide whether the ELON 3X is a showpiece or a working product for fleet owners. A coach that can't complete a 500-600 km overnight run with a single planned charging stop will struggle on the routes where sleeper buses earn their money.
Blackbuck EV is a relatively new name in the Indian electric bus market, which is crowded with established players and a wave of newer entrants chasing state transport tenders and private fleet orders. The company has positioned the ELON 3X as a flagship for its long-distance line.
The unveiling comes as several states push electric buses into intercity service under clean-fleet programmes, though most of that money so far has gone to city buses. Private operators, who run the bulk of India's sleeper coach fleet, have been slower to switch because of upfront cost and charging uncertainty.
Motorindia reported the launch on 3 November 2026. Blackbuck EV has not said when the ELON 3X will be available for customer deliveries.
