Electric car registrations jump 76% in October 2026, Tata holds top spot
EV share of India's passenger vehicle market doubled year on year as October registrations climbed 76%, with Tata leading the pack.
Electric car registrations in India rose 76% in October 2026, according to data compiled by Autopunditz. The same set shows Tata leading the electric passenger vehicle segment, and the EV share of overall car registrations doubling compared with a year earlier.
The numbers point to a market that is still small but moving faster than the rest of the passenger vehicle space. A 76% jump in a single month is a sharp swing. Doubling market share in twelve months is sharper still.
Tata stays out front
Tata's lead is not new. The company has held the top slot in electric car registrations for several quarters, and October kept it there. Autopunditz did not break out model-level numbers in its headline finding, but the ranking puts Tata ahead of the rest of the field for the month.
Registrations are a useful gauge in India because they reflect vehicles actually hitting the road, not just factory dispatches. A registration figure tracks the buyer, the dealer and the regional transport office. That makes the 76% rise harder to wave away than a wholesale number.
What's behind the share doubling
Market share doubling means electric cars took twice the slice of total registrations they did in October 2025. Two things can drive that. More electric cars sold, or fewer petrol and diesel cars sold. October's data shows the first is clearly happening.
The base was low. Electric cars remain a small fraction of India's overall passenger vehicle market, so percentage gains look large. A 76% rise off a modest base still adds up to a meaningful number of new electric cars on Indian roads each month.
- Electric car registrations up 76% year on year in October 2026
- Tata leads the electric passenger vehicle segment
- EV market share doubles compared with October 2025
The wider EV picture
Passenger electric cars are one slice of India's EV story. Two- and three-wheelers still account for the bulk of electric vehicle volumes in the country, and electric buses have been picking up in several states. The car segment gets more attention because of the price tags and the branding, but it moves slower.
October's registration data lands as automakers head into the final stretch of the year. Festive-season buying typically lifts registrations in October and November, and this year's electric numbers appear to have caught that wave.
Autopunditz published the findings on November 6, 2026. The full dataset, including model-wise and brand-wise splits, sits behind the outlet's registration tracker.
For now, the headline is simple. Electric car registrations grew 76% in October. Tata led. And the EV share of the market doubled in a year.
