Retail sales of electric passenger vehicles in India rose 94.56% in September 2026, India Today reported on Wednesday. The figure covers registrations at dealerships and showrooms, not wholesale dispatches from factories.

The near-doubling marks another month of sharp growth for a segment that was barely a blip on the sales charts a few years ago. Buyers are walking into showrooms and driving out in battery-powered cars at roughly twice the pace they did in September 2025.

What the number says

A 94.56% jump is big by any measure. It means the segment added close to as many new owners in one month as it did in the same month a year earlier, combined. Retail data matters here because it reflects actual customer purchases, not stock pushed onto dealer lots.

India Today did not break the figure down by manufacturer, model, or state in its report. It also did not give the absolute number of units sold, so the percentage stands on its own for now.

Why the segment is moving

Electric passenger vehicles still make up a small slice of India's overall car market. But the direction of travel is clear. A handful of factors have been pushing buyers toward plugs instead of pumps.

  • Running costs: charging at home costs far less per kilometre than petrol or diesel.
  • Model choice: more electric cars are on sale across price bands than two years ago.
  • State incentives: several states still offer road-tax waivers and registration benefits.
  • Charging: public points have spread beyond the big metros, though unevenly.

None of these is new. What's changed is the pace at which they're stacking up. A buyer who looked at an electric car in 2024 and walked away now has more options and, in many cities, a charger closer to home.

The caveats

Percentage growth off a small base flatters any segment. If electric cars sold 10,000 units last September, a 94.56% rise puts this September near 19,500. Healthy, but still a rounding error against the roughly 4 million passenger vehicles India sells in a year.

Retail figures also swing with festive timing. September sits at the edge of the festive season in many years, and buyers often wait for Navratri or Diwali offers. A single month's spike can say as much about the calendar as about demand.

And the growth is not spread evenly. Metro buyers with driveways and rooftop solar are the easy converts. Buyers in smaller towns, or in apartments without dedicated parking, face a harder case.

What to watch

The next few months will show whether September was a step change or a festive blip. Two things matter: whether charging infrastructure keeps pace outside the top ten cities, and whether manufacturers hold prices steady once current incentives taper.

For now, the headline number is the headline. Electric passenger vehicle retail sales in India grew 94.56% year-on-year in September 2026, per India Today.
