EVs Take 13% of India's September Vehicle Sales
Electric vehicles crossed 13% of total sales in September, according to a report by urbanacres.in.
Electric vehicles accounted for more than 13% of all vehicles sold in India in September, urbanacres.in reported. The figure marks a continued climb for a segment that has moved from the margins of the market toward the mainstream.
The number covers the full spread of electric mobility in the country, from two-wheelers and three-wheelers to passenger cars and buses. Two- and three-wheelers have long done the heavy lifting on volumes, and that pattern held through September.
What's driving the shift
State subsidies, cheaper battery packs and a wider choice of models have pulled buyers in. Running costs help too. An electric scooter or rickshaw costs a fraction of a petrol equivalent to keep on the road, a gap that matters most to the commuters and small operators who make up the bulk of Indian EV buyers.
The charging network is still thin outside the big cities. That's the complaint you hear from buyers in smaller towns, and it's the reason many still pick a hybrid or a plain petrol model. Fleet operators, though, have gone electric in numbers, because they can charge at their own depots and run fixed routes.
Where the growth sits
- Two-wheelers: the largest slice of electric sales by volume.
- Three-wheelers: electric models now hold a big share of new sales in this category.
- Passenger cars: growing from a small base, led by a handful of models.
- Buses: state transport bodies have placed large orders.
Thirteen percent is a milestone, but it's not a finish line. The share has to keep climbing for India to meet its own targets on transport emissions. Charging infrastructure, grid load and the cost of finance for buyers will decide how fast that happens.
The September figure comes as global EV demand cools in some markets and policy support shifts. India's trajectory has so far run against that trend, helped by local manufacturing and a tariff wall that has pushed carmakers to build here rather than import.
urbanacres.in put the September share at over 13%. The outlet did not break the number down by segment in its report.
