Festive October pushes India's EV sales to a record 3.5 lakh units
The festive season gave electric vehicle sales their strongest month yet, with October volumes touching 3.5 lakh, according to a Times of India report.
India's electric vehicle market hit a new high in October, with sales touching 3.5 lakh units as festive-season demand lifted showroom footfalls across the country. The Times of India reported the record on Sunday, calling it the strongest month the segment has seen so far.
The number covers the full spread of electric mobility, from two-wheelers and three-wheelers to passenger cars. October is a heavy buying month in India. Navratri, Durga Puja and Diwali fall in or near it most years, and dealers push discounts and finance schemes to pull buyers in. This time, the electric side of the showroom got a bigger share of that rush.
What's driving the numbers
Two-wheelers have done most of the heavy lifting in India's EV story, and that pattern seems to have held through the festive month. Electric scooters are cheaper to run than petrol ones, and the upfront gap has narrowed as more models enter the market. Three-wheelers, especially in the cargo and last-mile delivery space, have also been switching over steadily.
Passenger electric cars remain a smaller slice. They cost more, and charging at home isn't an option for everyone. Still, the festive push appears to have brought more buyers into the segment than in previous months.
The record comes as several states keep up purchase incentives and road-tax waivers for electric vehicles. Charging infrastructure is still patchy outside the big cities, a point the industry has raised repeatedly. Buyers in metros have more options than those in smaller towns.
A record, but a single month
One month of strong sales doesn't settle the market's direction. Festive demand tends to pull purchases forward, and the months after Diwali often look quieter. Dealers will be watching November closely to see whether the momentum holds or whether October simply borrowed from the months around it.
The 3.5 lakh figure is a marker of how far the segment has come. It's also a test. If sales stay elevated through the winter, the festive spike will look like a genuine shift in buying behaviour. If they slide back, it'll look like a seasonal bump.
For now, the industry has a number to point to. October's 3.5 lakh units is the highest monthly EV tally India has recorded, per the Times of India report.
