India's EV Push Meets Its Grid: The Hard Part of Going Electric
Electric mobility is scaling fast in India, but charging infrastructure and grid readiness remain the real test.
India's electric mobility push has moved from pilot projects to something bigger. The country is now among the world's fastest-growing EV markets, with two- and three-wheelers doing most of the heavy lifting. That's not a small thing. It's the segment where Indian manufacturing already has scale, and where the switch away from petrol hits the most vehicles on the road.
The numbers tell a story of momentum. Electric two-wheeler registrations have climbed sharply over the past two years, helped by state subsidies and a widening lineup of affordable models. Three-wheelers, long the backbone of last-mile transport in cities like Delhi, Pune and Bengaluru, are going electric faster than many analysts expected. For fleet operators, the math is simple: lower running costs, fewer moving parts, less downtime.
Charging is the bottleneck
Here's where it gets harder. Charging infrastructure hasn't kept pace with vehicle sales. Public chargers are concentrated in a handful of metros, and even there, finding a working one can be a gamble. For a delivery rider in Indore or a cab driver in Kochi, range anxiety isn't an abstraction. It's a daily calculation.
The government has tried to close the gap. Schemes under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) programme and later initiatives have funded charging stations, but deployment has been uneven. Many chargers sit idle because of poor maintenance or incompatible connectors. Others are too slow to be useful for anyone in a hurry.
Grid strain and the power source question
Then there's the electricity itself. India's grid is still coal-heavy, though renewables are growing fast. If EVs charge mostly on thermal power, the climate gains shrink. That's not an argument against EVs. It's an argument for cleaning up the grid at the same time, and for smart charging that shifts demand to hours when solar and wind are abundant.
Some states are already testing time-of-day tariffs for EV charging. The idea is to nudge users toward off-peak hours, easing pressure on the grid and cutting costs. It's early, but the logic is sound.
Batteries, jobs and the supply chain
Battery manufacturing is the other piece. India still imports most of its lithium-ion cells, largely from China. Domestic cell production is ramping up, with several companies announcing gigafactory plans. But building a battery supply chain takes years, not months. Mining, refining, cell assembly, recycling, each step needs capital and clear policy.
The jobs question matters too. The shift to electric drivetrains will change what auto workers do. Fewer engine parts means fewer jobs in some areas, more in others. Training programmes are starting, but the scale is still small compared to the size of India's auto workforce.
What's actually working
- Electric two- and three-wheelers are selling in real volumes, not just on paper.
- State transport corporations are adding electric buses, cutting diesel use on city routes.
- Battery swapping is gaining ground for small vehicles, sidestepping the charging problem.
None of this is a straight line. Policy support has been uneven, and some subsidies have been cut or delayed. Manufacturers have complained about shifting timelines. Buyers have complained about service networks. These are the usual growing pains of a market moving from niche to mainstream.
The direction, though, is clear. India has committed to cutting transport emissions, and electric mobility is central to that plan. The question isn't whether the transition happens. It's whether the charging network, the grid and the supply chain can keep up with the vehicles already on the road.
