India's EV Shift Hits Historic Mark; Who Leads the Market?
As India crosses a major milestone in its shift away from petrol, the question of who dominates the electric vehicle market takes center stage.
India's move beyond petrol has reached a historic milestone, according to recent reports. The country is seeing a significant surge in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, with sales hitting record numbers. But as the market grows, one question looms: who is leading the charge?
The data points to a clear front-runner. Tata Motors has emerged as the dominant player in India's EV market, capturing a substantial share of sales. The company's Nexon EV and Tigor EV have become popular choices among Indian consumers, thanks to their affordability and range. In the fiscal year 2025-26, Tata Motors sold over 60,000 EVs, a sharp increase from the previous year.
Other automakers are also stepping up. MG Motor, with its ZS EV, has carved out a niche, while Mahindra Electric is pushing forward with its XUV400. Newer entrants like BYD and Hyundai are also vying for a slice of the pie, but Tata's early mover advantage and extensive charging network have kept it ahead.
The milestone itself is noteworthy. In August 2026, India's cumulative EV sales crossed the 2 million mark, a figure that seemed distant just a few years ago. This growth is fueled by government incentives, falling battery costs, and a growing network of charging stations. The Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme has been a key driver, offering subsidies to buyers.
Yet, challenges remain. Charging infrastructure is still patchy, especially outside major cities. Range anxiety persists among potential buyers. And the upfront cost of EVs, though declining, is still higher than petrol cars. Industry experts say addressing these issues is crucial for sustaining the momentum.
"The growth is encouraging, but we need to ensure that the ecosystem keeps pace," said an industry analyst. "Charging stations, service networks, and battery recycling are all areas that need attention."
Meanwhile, the two-wheeler segment is also electrifying. Ola Electric and Ather Energy are leading the way, with their scooters becoming common sights in urban areas. In September 2026, Ola Electric reported monthly sales of over 30,000 units, a record for the company.
The shift beyond petrol is not just about cars and scooters. Electric buses are plying on city roads, and electric rickshaws are a common mode of transport in many towns. The government's push for electric public transport is showing results, with several state transport corporations adding e-buses to their fleets.
As India accelerates its EV journey, the market is becoming more competitive. Tata Motors may dominate today, but the landscape could change quickly. With global automakers eyeing India's vast potential, the race is far from over.
