Passenger vehicle wholesales in India rose 21.8 per cent to 4.54 lakh units in September, industry body SIAM said. The figure covers dispatches from manufacturers to dealers, not retail sales to buyers.

The September number compares with the same month a year earlier. SIAM, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, publishes the monthly wholesale data for the sector.

What the number covers

Wholesale figures track vehicles billed by factories to dealerships. They can run ahead of showroom demand when dealers stock up, and behind it when they clear inventory. SIAM's release did not break out the retail picture in the summary.

The 4.54 lakh units put September's passenger vehicle dispatches at a higher level than the year-ago month. The 21.8 per cent growth is a year-on-year comparison.

Why it matters for clean energy

Passenger vehicles are the biggest single source of new tailpipe emissions on Indian roads, and the segment's direction shapes fuel demand. A rising wholesale number means more petrol and diesel cars entering the fleet unless electric models take a bigger share.

Electric passenger vehicle sales in India remain a small slice of the total, though they are growing from a low base. The wholesale headline figure does not separate electric from combustion-engine models.

For the clean-energy sector, the September data is a reminder of scale. Every monthly bump in total PV dispatches sets the baseline that electric models have to displace.

The detail behind the headline

  • Passenger vehicle wholesales: 4.54 lakh units in September
  • Year-on-year growth: 21.8 per cent
  • Source: SIAM monthly data

SIAM's monthly releases typically cover passenger vehicles, two-wheelers and commercial vehicles. The passenger vehicle category includes cars, utility vehicles and vans.

The 21.8 per cent rise follows a period of uneven monthly demand for the segment. Carmakers have been pushing dispatches ahead of the festive season, when showroom footfall usually peaks.

Dealers watch wholesale and retail numbers together. A gap between the two can signal inventory build-up on forecourts.

SIAM has not, in the summary of this release, given a model-wise or fuel-wise split. That leaves the electric share of September's 4.54 lakh units unstated in the headline data.

The Hans India reported the SIAM figures on October 15.
