Production-spec Honda 0 Alpha to make India debut on December 2

Honda will bring the production version of its 0 Alpha electric SUV to India on December 2. The debut was reported by Autocar India. The event marks the first time the production-spec model will be shown in the country.

The 0 Alpha is part of Honda's new 0 Series of electric vehicles. The production model was unveiled earlier this year. The India debut comes as the company prepares to launch electric cars in the market.

Honda has not shared details about when the 0 Alpha will go on sale in India or how much it will cost. The company has also not said whether the India-spec model will be built locally or imported.

The 0 Series was first shown as a concept at CES 2024. The production version stays close to the concept's design. It uses a new platform and a slim battery pack. Honda says the 0 Series will focus on efficiency and a light footprint.

For India, the 0 Alpha would compete in the growing electric SUV segment. Rivals include the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and BYD Atto 3. Mahindra and Tata Motors also have electric SUVs on sale.

Honda currently sells the City e:HEV hybrid and the Elevate SUV in India. It does not have a battery-electric model in its India lineup. The 0 Alpha would be its first EV for the market.

The company has been slow to bring EVs to India. It has focused on hybrids instead. But the market is shifting. Electric car sales in India are still small, but they are growing. The government wants more EVs on the road.

Honda's India arm has said it will launch an electric SUV by 2026. It has not confirmed if that model will be the 0 Alpha. The December 2 event could shed more light on those plans.

Autocar India reported the debut date. The publication did not say where the event will be held or what else Honda will show.

Honda is not the only Japanese carmaker pushing into EVs. Toyota and Suzuki are also working on electric models for India. Toyota has the bZ4X, though it is not on sale here yet. Suzuki will launch its first EV, the eVX, in 2025.

The 0 Alpha's India debut is a sign that Honda is taking the market more seriously. But questions remain about pricing, range, and local production. Without those details, it is hard to say how the SUV will fare against established rivals.

Honda has not announced a launch date for the 0 Alpha in India. The December 2 event is likely to be a show, not a market launch. More information is expected at the event.
