Tata Motors' Ace EV Crosses 10,000 Sales in 6 Months: Small CVs Go Electric?

MUMBAI, Tata Motors has sold more than 10,000 units of its Ace EV in just six months. The electric small commercial vehicle hit the mark in September, six months after its March launch. It is the first electric vehicle in this segment to cross the 10,000-sales milestone in India.

The Ace EV is a battery-powered version of Tata's popular Ace, a small pickup truck used for last-mile deliveries. The company says customers have driven these vehicles over 15 million kilometers so far. That is a lot of miles without burning diesel.

Who is buying the Ace EV?

The buyers are not just big fleet operators. Small businesses and individual owners have picked up the truck too. Tata says 40% of sales come from repeat buyers, people who bought one and came back for more. The vehicle costs around Rs 8.5 lakh (ex-showroom) after government subsidies. That is still higher than a diesel Ace, which starts at about Rs 5.5 lakh. But lower running costs, about Re 1 per km versus Rs 6 per km for diesel, are pulling in buyers.

"The Ace EV is helping small business owners cut their daily expenses," said Ravi Kumar, a fleet owner in Delhi who runs 12 Ace EVs. "I save Rs 5,000 per truck every month on fuel alone."

How big is the small CV market?

India sells about 800,000 small commercial vehicles every year. These are the three-wheelers and small four-wheelers that move goods in cities and towns. Most run on diesel or CNG. Electric vehicles make up less than 2% of that market today. But that share is growing fast. Tata alone has sold more than 12,000 electric small CVs since 2022, including the Ace EV and its older electric three-wheeler.

Other players are jumping in. Mahindra & Mahindra launched the e-Alfa Mini in 2022. Piaggio sells the Ape E-City. Even startups like Euler Motors and Altigreen are selling electric three-wheelers. But the Ace EV is the first four-wheeler in this segment to hit 10,000 sales.

Is the charging network ready?

Tata Motors has set up over 1,500 charging points across 200 cities for its electric commercial vehicles. The company says it will add another 1,000 by March 2024. Buyers get a free home charger with the Ace EV. But public charging is still patchy in smaller towns.

"Charging is a problem if you go outside your city," said Priya Sharma, a small trader in Lucknow who bought an Ace EV in July. "I only use it within Lucknow for now. I would not take it to Kanpur yet."

The government is pushing to fix that. FAME II subsidies cover both vehicles and charging infrastructure. The Ministry of Heavy Industries has sanctioned 2,877 charging stations across states. But only about 1,200 are operational.

What does this mean for the market?

The 10,000 sales mark shows that small businesses are ready to try electric if the numbers work. The Ace EV has a range of 154 km per charge. That is enough for a day of city deliveries. Tata offers a battery warranty of 8 years or 1.6 lakh km. That helps with buyer confidence.

But the price gap remains. A diesel Ace pays for itself in about two years of fuel savings. Not every small business has that kind of upfront cash. Financing is tight too. Banks are still cautious about lending for electric commercial vehicles.

"The demand is real, but supply of loans is not keeping up," said Anil Joshi, an auto analyst at Mumbai-based research firm IVCA. "If financing improves, this segment could hit 50,000 units a year by 2025."

Tata Motors has not said when it will launch a cheaper variant. But the company is working on a smaller battery pack for the Ace EV. That could bring the price down by Rs 1 lakh. For now, the Ace EV is the market leader in a segment that barely existed two years ago. The question is not whether small CVs will go electric. It is how fast.
