Tata Motors Lines Up Three New Electric Cars for India, From Aeris.EV to Safari.EV
The homegrown automaker is expanding its EV portfolio with an electric version of every major nameplate, according to a Cartoq report.
Tata Motors has three new electric cars coming to India, according to a report by Cartoq. The lineup stretches from the small Aeris.EV to the Safari.EV, covering most of the company's popular models.
The move builds on Tata's early lead in India's electric passenger vehicle market. The company already sells the Nexon EV, Tigor EV, and Tiago EV. Adding electric versions of the Aeris, and Safari would give buyers more choices across segments.
What's coming
The report names three models: the Aeris.EV, the Safari.EV, and one more that sits between them. Cartoq didn't share a full timeline or technical details. Tata hasn't confirmed prices, battery sizes, or launch dates.
The Aeris is Tata's compact SUV, positioned below the Nexon. An electric Aeris would likely target city drivers who want an affordable EV. The Safari is a larger SUV, so a Safari.EV would go after families needing more range and space.
Tata has said it plans to launch 10 EVs by 2026. The company showed the Curvv EV concept and the Avinya concept in recent years. The three new models fit that push.
Why it matters
India's EV market is still small but growing. Electric cars made up about 1.3% of total passenger vehicle sales in 2023, according to industry data. The government wants that share to hit 30% by 2030.
Tata dominates the electric car segment with more than 70% market share. Rivals like Mahindra, Hyundai, and MG are catching up. Mahindra will launch the XUV400 EV, and Hyundai has the Ioniq 5. MG sells the ZS EV.
More models from Tata could keep pressure on competitors. It also helps the company use its existing platforms and supply chain. Tata has a joint venture with Tata AutoComp for EV components. It's also building a battery plant in Gujarat.
Charging network
Charging remains a hurdle. India has about 5,000 public charging stations, most in cities. Tata Power has installed over 4,000 chargers, but they're concentrated in metros. For EVs to work in smaller towns, the network needs to grow.
Tata Motors has partnered with Tata Power to set up chargers at dealerships. The company offers home charging installation for buyers. That helps, but highway charging is still spotty.
What's next
Cartoq's report didn't say when the three cars will hit showrooms. Tata is expected to reveal more details at the Auto Expo in 2025. The company has a plant in Pune that can make EVs. It's also converting an old Ford plant in Gujarat for EV production.
For now, the Aeris.EV and Safari.EV are just names in a report. Tata hasn't made an official announcement. But the direction is clear: the company wants an electric option in every segment it sells.
That's a big bet on India's EV future. Whether buyers follow will depend on price, range, and charging. Tata has the early lead. Keeping it will take more than new badges.
