Tata Punch Leads September 2026 EV Sales, Mahindra XEV 9S Second as Dispatches Jump 62%
Tata's small electric car topped the monthly charts while Mahindra's new XEV 9S slotted into second, with overall electric car dispatches climbing 62% year on year.
Electric car dispatches from factories to dealers rose 62% in September 2026, according to sales data compiled by Autopunditz. The Tata Punch took the top spot on the monthly EV charts. Mahindra's XEV 9S finished second.
The Punch has become Tata's volume electric model, and September's numbers put it ahead of the rest of the field. Mahindra's XEV 9S, part of the company's new electric lineup, held the runner-up position in its early months on the market.
Dispatches are wholesale figures, not retail registrations. They show what carmakers push to showrooms, and they can run ahead of actual customer deliveries when dealers stock up. A 62% jump points to heavy channel filling as companies build inventory for the festive season.
What the numbers say
The headline figure is the 62% rise in total electric car dispatches for the month. That's a sharp climb, and it lands as more models enter the market and price points spread out across segments.
- Tata Punch: first place among electric cars in September 2026
- Mahindra XEV 9S: second place
- Overall EV dispatches: up 62% year on year
Tata has held a large share of India's electric passenger car market for several years, built on the Nexon EV and then widened with the Punch and other models. Mahindra, a late but aggressive entrant, is now pushing hard with its born-electric range.
The XEV 9S taking second place matters. It suggests Mahindra's new platform is finding buyers at a price point above the entry-level cars that have driven most of India's EV volumes so far.
Why dispatches and sales aren't the same thing
Reporters and analysts lean on dispatch data because it comes out fast and covers the whole industry. But it's a supply-side number. A big month of dispatches can mean strong demand, or it can mean dealers are loading up ahead of a sales push.
Retail registration data, which lags by a few weeks, gives the cleaner read on what customers actually bought. For now, the September dispatch figures show carmakers are confident enough to keep the lines running and the yards full.
The 62% growth also comes off a base that's still small in absolute terms. Electric cars remain a sliver of India's overall passenger vehicle market, though that sliver keeps widening each quarter.
