New Delhi \[India], September 22 (ANI): The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has approved two new hydro-pumped storage projects (PSPs) in Maharashtra to support India’s renewable energy goals, according to the Ministry of Power. These projects are the 1500 MW Bhavali PSP by JSW Energy Ltd. and the 1000 MW Bhivpuri PSP by Tata Power Co. Ltd., providing over 15 GWh of storage capacity.

The approval is expected to expedite renewable energy integration and aid the transition to a greener energy system, as stated by the Power Ministry. The projects received swift approval from the Central Water Commission (CWC), Geological Survey of India (GSI), and Central Soil and Materials Research Station (CSMRS) within 10 days of the completion of their Detailed Project Reports (DPRs).

The developers aim to fast-track the projects, with completion expected in 44 to 46 months, by 2028. This energy storage is vital for meeting peak demand during non-solar hours and ensuring grid stability, the ministry noted.

The CEA plans to approve at least two PSPs each month this year, contingent on DPR completion by developers. For 2024-25, the target is to approve 15 Hydro PSPs with a capacity of 25,500 MW, with 4 PSPs of 5,100 MW already approved.

To enhance transparency, the CEA has launched an online portal “Jalvi-store” for processing PSP chapters at the pre-DPR stage. The approval of these projects highlights the increasing role of private sector participation in India’s energy transition, fostering a collaborative energy ecosystem between public and private sectors. The CEA expressed confidence that these projects will enhance the reliability and sustainability of India’s electricity grid, contributing to a robust and resilient energy future. (ANI)
