Electric car registrations in India rose 77% year on year to 36,064 units in October 2026, according to data compiled by Autopunditz. The figures, published on November 3, point to a market that keeps adding volume even as the model mix shifts between the big players.

Tata Motors stayed on top. The company's early lead in the segment has held through the year, and October was no different. Mahindra, which has been pushing hard into electric SUVs, gained market share over the month. MG, by contrast, lost ground.

What the numbers say

The headline is the growth rate. A 77% jump on the same month last year is steep, and it comes off a base that was already climbing. October also tends to be a strong month for registrations in India, with festive demand spilling into showrooms and delivery queues.

Autopunditz tracks registrations rather than wholesale dispatches, so the numbers reflect vehicles actually hitting the road. That makes the 36,064 figure a cleaner read on demand than factory gate sales.

The share movement matters as much as the total. Tata's lead looks secure for now, but Mahindra's gain shows the fight for second place is tightening. MG's slide is the other side of that story.

Why it matters

Electric cars are still a small slice of India's overall passenger vehicle market. But the pace of growth is what the industry watches. A 77% annual rise suggests buyers are moving past the early-adopter stage, at least in the urban pockets where charging is easier to find.

Policy has helped. State-level incentives and the central government's push on charging infrastructure have made electric cars more practical for fleet operators and private buyers alike. The festive season gave that a nudge.

There's a catch. Registrations can swing month to month, and one strong October doesn't settle the question of whether the market can hold this pace. Supply of batteries, the pace of new model launches and the cost of financing all feed into what happens next.

The competitive picture

  • Tata Motors: leads the segment, holds the top spot in October
  • Mahindra: gains market share on the back of its electric SUV lineup
  • MG: loses market share month on month

The three-way contest is the one to watch. Tata built its lead on affordable models aimed at city buyers. Mahindra has come at the market from the SUV side, where margins are fatter and buyers are less price-sensitive. MG, which entered early with the ZS EV, now finds itself squeezed between the two.

None of this changes the broader picture. India's electric car market is growing fast from a small base, and the companies that get their pricing and charging partnerships right will take the biggest share of that growth. October's 36,064 registrations are the latest marker of how quickly that's happening.
