Electric Car Sales August 2026: Tata Leads as Market Nearly Doubles
India's electric passenger vehicle market posted its strongest month yet, with Tata Motors holding the top spot and new entrants Mahindra and VinFast making gains.
India's electric car market nearly doubled in August 2026, according to sales data compiled by Autopunditz. Tata Motors led the pack, while Mahindra and VinFast posted strong gains.
The overall market grew to 12,456 units last month, up from 6,789 units in August 2025. That's an 83% jump. It's the highest monthly total on record for electric passenger vehicles in India.
Tata stays on top
Tata Motors sold 6,789 units in August, giving it a 54.5% share of the electric car market. The Nexon EV and Tiago EV remain the company's bestsellers. Tata's sales were up 45% from the same month last year, though its market share slipped from 68% as competition intensified.
"Tata has built a strong early lead, but the field is widening," said an industry analyst who tracks EV registrations. "The question is whether Tata can hold share as new models arrive."
Mahindra and VinFast gain ground
Mahindra & Mahindra sold 2,345 electric cars in August, a 120% increase year-on-year. The XUV400 and the newly launched XUV700 EV drove the growth. Mahindra now holds 18.8% of the market.
VinFast, the Vietnamese automaker that entered India last year, sold 1,234 units in August. That's up from just 123 units a year earlier. Its VF6 and VF7 models have found a niche among fleet operators and early adopters.
Other players, including MG Motor, Hyundai, and BYD, accounted for the remaining 2,088 units.
What's driving the surge
Several factors are behind the near-doubling. State subsidies under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme continue to support buyers. More charging stations have come up in major cities. And automakers have rolled out more affordable models with longer ranges.
"The market is moving from early adopters to mainstream buyers," said an executive at a charging network company. "That's a big shift."
August's numbers suggest the electric car segment is no longer a niche. It's becoming a real part of India's auto market.
