EV Sales Soar in India, But Private Owners Remain Skeptical
Electric vehicle sales are climbing fast, yet private buyers still hesitate over charging, cost, and resale value.
Electric vehicle sales in India are rising sharply. But private car owners aren't convinced yet. That's the takeaway from an NDTV report published on September 18, 2026.
The numbers tell a story of growth. More EVs are hitting Indian roads than ever before. Fleet operators, delivery companies, and commercial buyers are driving much of that surge. They run fixed routes, charge at depots, and care about fuel savings over sticker price.
Private buyers see things differently. For them, an EV is a daily driver. It has to work on unplanned trips, sit in traffic, and handle weekend getaways. And that's where the doubts creep in.
Charging remains the biggest worry
India's public charging network is still thin. In cities, finding a working charger can be a gamble. On highways, it's worse. A private owner who can't charge at home faces a real problem. Even those with a driveway worry about long trips. Range anxiety isn't just a phrase. It's a daily calculation.
Upfront cost and resale value
EVs cost more to buy than comparable petrol or diesel models. Yes, running costs are lower. But the gap at the showroom is hard to ignore. Then there's resale. The used EV market in India is young and unpredictable. Buyers don't know what their car will be worth in five years. That uncertainty keeps many on the sidelines.
What could change
Better charging infrastructure would help. So would more affordable models. Government incentives have boosted sales, but they mostly benefit commercial fleets. Private buyers want clearer signals on battery life, service costs, and resale.
For now, the EV boom is real. But it's not yet a private-owner revolution. The NDTV report makes that clear. Sales are soaring. Skepticism is still parked in the driveway.
