Indian solar manufacturers are shifting toward G12R-based cells, according to a report by Saur Energy. The outlet listed five reasons behind the move, published on September 15, 2026.

The G12R format sits between the older M10 and the full-size G12 wafer. Manufacturers say the change is driven by cost, output and compatibility with existing lines.

  • Lower cost per watt. Larger wafers cut the number of cells needed per module, trimming material and handling costs.
  • Higher module power. G12R cells let manufacturers push module wattage higher without changing factory footprints.
  • Better use of existing lines. Many Indian plants can upgrade to G12R with limited retooling, avoiding a full shift to G12.
  • Supply chain pull. Cell makers in China and Southeast Asia are scaling G12R output, making it easier for Indian firms to source.
  • Policy and demand pressure. Domestic content rules and utility-scale tenders favor higher-efficiency modules, pushing makers toward the format.

The shift is not without friction. G12R requires tighter process control and new handling equipment. Some smaller manufacturers may wait for the format to settle before committing.

India's solar manufacturing sector has expanded under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers and production-linked incentives. Module capacity has grown faster than cell capacity, leaving a gap that imports still fill. A move to G12R could widen that gap if domestic cell lines lag.

For now, the direction is clear. Indian manufacturers are watching G12R closely, and several have already made the switch.
