The growth spans utility-scale parks, rooftop systems and off-grid installations. It also tracks a decade in which solar moved from a niche power source to the main engine of India's renewable energy pipeline.
What the numbers say
At 2 GW, solar was a rounding error in a grid that leaned on coal. At 160 GW and above, it is a load-bearing part of the system. The 12-year window puts the starting point around 2014, when the government began pushing large solar parks and auctions in earnest.
Several things lined up. Module prices fell worldwide. States set aside land for solar parks. Tariffs dropped to record lows in competitive bids. Developers built at scale, and the grid absorbed more variable power than many had expected.
The result is a capacity base that few forecasters called in 2014. Back then, hitting 100 GW by 2022 looked ambitious. India missed that target, but still crossed it later.
Where the growth came from
- Utility-scale parks in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh
- Rooftop solar on homes, schools and factories, helped by subsidy schemes
- Solar pumps and mini-grids in rural areas
- Falling module and inverter prices, mostly driven by imports
Rajasthan alone hosts a large share of the country's solar fleet, helped by high irradiation and open land. Gujarat and Karnataka follow.
What still needs work
Capacity is not the same as generation. Solar panels produce only when the sun shines, so the grid needs storage, transmission lines and flexible backup. Land acquisition remains slow in some states. Domestic manufacturing is still catching up with demand, and import dependence has been a recurring policy headache.
Rooftop solar, despite subsidies, has trailed utility-scale growth. Discoms have been wary of losing their best-paying customers.
The 160 GW figure covers installed capacity, not actual output. India's solar plants generate at a fraction of their rated capacity over a full year, so the energy contribution is smaller than the headline number suggests.
Even so, the shift is hard to miss. A technology that barely registered in 2014 now sits near the centre of India's power plans.
