India’s Wind Power Capacity Hits 57.44 GW, Boosting Renewable Growth

India's wind farms now total 57.44 GW, marking a steady climb in clean energy output.

India's wind power capacity reached 57.44 gigawatts (GW) in the latest reporting period, according to data released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The figure shows a continued rise in the country's clean‑energy supply and puts India among the world's largest wind markets.

Recent additions

New projects added in the last year contributed about 4.2 GW, with most of the growth coming from the states of Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Rajasthan. Developers used a mix of on‑shore turbines ranging from 2.5 MW to 5 MW, and the average capacity factor stayed near 30 percent.

Impact on the grid

The extra wind power helped lower the share of coal in the national generation mix. In the first half of the year, wind accounted for roughly 8 percent of total electricity, up from 6.5 percent a year earlier. Grid operators said the additional wind output eased pressure on peak‑hour demand and reduced emissions by an estimated 12 million tonnes of CO₂.

Government targets

India aims to reach 60 GW of wind capacity by 2027 and 140 GW of overall renewable power by 2030. The latest milestone shows the country is on track for the near‑term goal. The MNRE plans to speed up approvals, improve land‑allocation processes and offer extra incentives for hybrid solar‑wind projects.

Outlook

Analysts expect further growth as private investors look at offshore wind opportunities along the east coast. The government is also reviewing policies to allow more open‑access trading of wind power, which could bring down prices for consumers.
