Tata Punch EV Tops India's Electric Car Sales in May 2026
Mahindra's 9S trailed closely as EV adoption grows in India's competitive market.
Market Leaders Hold Steady
The Tata Punch EV maintained its position as India's best-selling electric car in May 2026, according to sales data analyzed by Autopunditz. Mahindra's 9S model followed just behind, marking another month of strong competition between India's top domestic automakers.
Sales Breakdown
- Tata Punch EV: 3,412 units sold
- Mahindra 9S: 3,208 units sold
- Nexon EV: 2,891 units sold
- Tata Tiago EV: 2,543 units sold
The gap between first and second place narrowed to just 204 units this month, down from 327 in April. Tata still holds three of the top four slots with its affordable EV lineup.
Market Context
EV sales now make up 9.3% of India's passenger vehicle market, up from 7.1% a year ago. The Punch EV's starting price of ₹10.99 lakh (ex-showroom) and 315 km range continue to attract urban buyers. Mahindra's 9S, priced slightly higher at ₹12.45 lakh, gained ground with its larger cabin and 340 km range.
