VinFast to build two India-specific EVs in strategy shift, sources say

VinFast plans to develop two electric vehicles designed specifically for Indian buyers, sources told economictimes.com, a shift from its earlier approach of bringing global models to the market.

The company has not named the models, the segments they will sit in, or a timeline for their launch. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because the plans are not public.

The move marks a change in how the Vietnamese automaker intends to compete in India. VinFast broke ground on a manufacturing plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, and has been building out a supplier base in the state. Its India entry has so far leaned on vehicles engineered elsewhere. Developing models for Indian roads, price points and charging conditions is a different kind of commitment.

Why India-specific matters

India's EV market rewards cars built to a budget. Buyers in the mass segment are sensitive to sticker price, running cost and the size of the local service network. A vehicle tuned for another market often lands too expensive or too large for that fight.

Local design also lets an automaker use more India-made parts, which helps on cost and on local content rules. Tamil Nadu has become a hub for EV and component manufacturing, with several automakers and battery firms setting up shop around Chennai and the southern districts.

VinFast has not said how much it will spend on the two programmes or where the engineering work will happen. The sources did not give a launch window.

What's still unclear

  • Which segments the two EVs will target
  • Whether they will be built at the Tamil Nadu plant
  • Pricing and launch dates
  • How much local sourcing the company plans

India's electric passenger vehicle market is still small but growing. Tata Motors leads it, with Mahindra & Mahindra and MG Motor close behind. Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki and others have lined up launches. For a newcomer, a made-for-India product line is one way to avoid being a footnote.

VinFast's global record is mixed. It has pushed into the US and Indonesia, and it has posted losses while scaling up. Its India bet rests on the same question every new entrant faces here: can it sell enough cars at a price Indian buyers will pay?

The company has not responded to a request for comment on the two-model plan.
