Audi India is plotting a comeback. The German luxury carmaker will add new models, including electric vehicles, and expand its showroom network to 40 outlets across the country, according to a report by Moneycontrol.com published on September 11, 2026.

The move marks a renewed push in a market where Audi has lagged rivals Mercedes-Benz and BMW in recent years. The company currently has a smaller retail footprint, and the expansion to 40 showrooms is aimed at reaching more buyers in smaller cities as well as metros.

Audi's global portfolio is shifting toward electric. The India arm is expected to bring some of those EVs, though the report did not specify which models or a timeline. The brand already sells the e-tron range in India, but volumes have been modest because of high import duties and limited charging infrastructure.

New internal combustion models are also part of the plan. Audi has a fresh generation of cars globally, and some of those will likely make it to Indian showrooms. The company has not shared a model-wise break-up.

The 40-showroom target is a significant jump from its current count. For context, Mercedes-Benz has over 100 outlets in India, and BMW around 80. Audi's smaller network has been a handicap in reaching customers beyond the big cities.

Luxury car sales in India have been growing, helped by a young affluent class and easier financing. But the segment remains tiny compared to the overall passenger vehicle market. Electric luxury cars are an even smaller slice, though demand is rising.

Audi's plan comes at a time when the Indian government is pushing for more EVs, with schemes like PLI and lower GST on some electric models. However, imported EVs still attract high duties, which makes it hard for brands like Audi to price them competitively.

The company has not commented on the specifics of the report. Moneycontrol.com said the details were based on its sources.

For Audi, the comeback hinges on execution. New models and more showrooms will help, but the brand also needs to fix its brand perception and after-sales service, areas where it has trailed rivals. The next few years will show whether the plan works.
