The filing, first reported by Autocar India, points to another model joining Hyundai's electric Ioniq line-up, though the company hasn't confirmed a launch.

Hyundai has trademarked the name "Ioniq P" in India. Autocar India reported the filing on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. The move signals the Korean carmaker may be preparing another electric model for the Indian market, though a trademark is not a launch announcement.

The Ioniq badge already covers Hyundai's dedicated battery-electric range globally. The Ioniq 5 is on sale in India. The Ioniq 6 sedan has also been shown here. What the "P" stands for isn't clear from the filing.

Why a trademark matters

Carmakers routinely register model names years before a vehicle reaches showrooms. Some filings never turn into products. Others do. Hyundai's India arm has been expanding its electric line-up as buyers in the premium segment show more interest in EVs.

The company currently sells the Ioniq 5 in India, assembled from imported kits. Localisation has been a talking point for years. A wider Ioniq range would need a stronger local supply chain to compete on price.

Autocar India's report did not specify the type of vehicle the name might be used for. It could be an SUV, a crossover, or a variant of an existing model. Hyundai has not commented on the filing.

What we know and what we don't

  • The trademark was filed in India, according to Autocar India.
  • The name is "Ioniq P".
  • Hyundai already sells the Ioniq 5 in India.
  • No launch date, price, or specification has been confirmed.

Trademark filings in India are public records, and newsrooms track them to spot upcoming products. They're a useful early signal. They're not proof.

Hyundai's Indian EV plans have leaned on the Ioniq 5 so far, with the Creta Electric added to the portfolio as a mass-market option. A new Ioniq nameplate would sit at the premium end.

The broader Indian EV market is still small but growing. Passenger electric car sales remain a sliver of total volumes, held back by charging infrastructure and upfront cost. Carmakers are hedging, launching models while keeping petrol and hybrid options alive.

For now, the Ioniq P is a name on a government register. Whether it becomes a car on Indian roads depends on decisions Hyundai hasn't made public.
