India Marks Global Wind Day 2026 With Focus on Renewable Growth

Wind Power Expansion Tops Agenda

India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy released a statement marking Global Wind Day 2026, detailing the country's progress in wind energy capacity. The nation has added 2.5 GW of wind power in the past year, bringing total installed capacity to 45 GW.

"Wind energy now makes up 10% of India's total power generation mix," the statement said. The government aims to hit 60 GW by 2030 as part of its renewable energy commitments.

Key Projects Underway

Three major wind farms are currently in development:

• A 1.2 GW offshore project in Gujarat
• 800 MW hybrid wind-solar park in Tamil Nadu
• 500 MW repowering initiative in Maharashtra

The PIB release noted these projects will create 8,000 temporary jobs during construction and 1,200 permanent positions.

Policy Push Continues

Recent reforms include faster land clearances for wind projects and upgraded transmission infrastructure. The government simplified approval processes for wind-solar hybrid systems last month.

India's wind energy sector attracted $3.2 billion in foreign investment during 2025-26. The statement reaffirmed plans to auction 5 GW of wind capacity this fiscal year.
