India's Solar Capacity Tops 168 GW, 2026 Additions Hit 34.45 GW by August
The country has already installed 34.45 GW of solar this year, with four months of 2026 still left on the calendar.
India's installed solar capacity has crossed 168 GW, according to figures reported by solarquarter.com. The same report puts 2026 installations at 34.45 GW through August.
That's a lot of panels in eight months. It also means the country is running well ahead of the roughly 30 GW it added in a full year not long ago.
The 168 GW figure covers everything connected to the grid: utility-scale parks in Rajasthan and Gujarat, rooftop systems on homes and factories, and the fast-growing segment of solar that sits behind the meter. The 34.45 GW is the 2026 slice alone.
What's driving the numbers
Utility-scale auctions have kept a steady pipeline moving. Rajasthan and Gujarat remain the biggest states by installed capacity, helped by flat land, strong sun and transmission links that have been upgraded over the past few years.
Rooftop solar has also picked up, though it still trails the utility segment by a wide margin. Falling module prices, both domestic and imported, have made the math easier for homeowners and small businesses.
Then there's the manufacturing side. India has been building out its own module and cell capacity, and that's starting to show up in project timelines. Developers have more options than they did three years ago.
The 2026 pace
Hitting 34.45 GW by August puts the year on track for a strong finish. The last four months of the calendar usually bring a push to commission projects before the financial year closes, though the monsoon and land issues can slow things down.
For context, India's total solar capacity was around 70 GW in early 2023. Crossing 168 GW now shows how quickly the base has grown, even if the yearly additions have been uneven.
What still needs work
Grid integration is the obvious one. Solar is variable, and the more you add, the more you need storage, flexible generation and stronger transmission. Battery storage tenders have been awarded, but deployment is still early.
Land and transmission bottlenecks haven't gone away either. Projects in some states have been delayed by right-of-way issues and substation readiness.
And the rooftop segment, while growing, remains a small share of the total. Getting more homes and small businesses to install panels is a policy goal that has moved slower than the utility-scale side.
The 168 GW mark is a milestone. The 34.45 GW in eight months is the number that tells you how fast the machine is actually running.
