INOX Air Products Inks Long-Term Pact to Supply UHP Nitrogen for INA Solar's 4.5 GW Plant

INOX Air Products has signed a long-term agreement to supply ultra-high purity (UHP) nitrogen to INA Solar. The gas will feed INA Solar's new 4.5 GW solar cell plant. The deal was announced earlier this week, though financial terms were not disclosed.

The pact covers the full requirement of UHP nitrogen for the plant. That includes the supply of liquid nitrogen as well as on-site generation infrastructure. INOX Air Products will set up a dedicated facility at INA Solar's site to produce the gas.

UHP nitrogen is a critical input in solar cell manufacturing. It is used to create an inert atmosphere during the production of photovoltaic cells. Without it, oxygen and moisture can contaminate the cells and lower their efficiency.

INA Solar is building its 4.5 GW plant as part of India's push to scale up domestic solar manufacturing. The country wants to reduce its reliance on imported cells and modules. The plant is expected to come online in phases over the next two years.

For INOX Air Products, the deal marks another big win in the industrial gas space. The company has been expanding its footprint in the renewable energy supply chain. It already supplies gases to several solar and electronics manufacturers in India.

"This partnership shows our commitment to supporting India's clean energy goals," said a company spokesperson in a statement. "We are proud to enable INA Solar's manufacturing capabilities with our reliable supply of high-purity nitrogen."

The agreement also includes a long-term service and maintenance contract. INOX Air Products will monitor gas quality and system performance remotely. That ensures the plant gets a steady, uninterrupted flow of nitrogen.

India's solar cell manufacturing capacity is growing fast. The government has offered production-linked incentives to boost local output. Several companies have announced new plants in Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and other states.

But building a solar cell plant is capital-intensive. And the supply of high-purity gases is a major operational challenge. Many manufacturers prefer to outsource gas supply to specialists like INOX Air Products.

The deal is structured as a "build-own-operate" model. INOX Air Products will own the on-site generation equipment and run it. INA Solar pays only for the gas it consumes. That cuts upfront costs for the manufacturer.

This model is common in the industrial gas industry. It allows customers to focus on their core business while the gas company handles the technical side. For INOX Air Products, it locks in a steady revenue stream for years.

The INA Solar plant is located in a special economic zone. The location offers tax benefits and easier access to export markets. The company plans to sell a large share of its output to overseas buyers.

Solar cell manufacturing requires extremely pure nitrogen, with impurity levels below one part per million. Even tiny amounts of contamination can ruin a batch of cells. INOX Air Products has a track record of meeting these standards in other high-tech sectors.

The company runs similar supply deals for the semiconductor and pharmaceutical industries. Those sectors have even stricter purity requirements. That experience made INOX Air Products a natural partner for INA Solar.

No timeline was given for when the nitrogen supply will begin. But industry sources say it will likely start before the plant's first production line goes live.
