India Could Save 1.7 Million Lives by 2050 if EVs Replace Cars, Report Says

A new study finds that switching to electric vehicles could cut traffic related deaths by millions.

A research team from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi released a report this week that estimates a shift to electric vehicles could prevent about 1.7 million premature deaths in India by 2050. The authors built their analysis on data from the Ministry of Road Transport, the World Health Organization and the International Energy Agency.

How the study was built

The researchers looked at three scenarios. The first kept the current mix of gasoline and diesel cars. The second assumed a gradual rise in electric vehicle sales to reach 30 percent of the fleet by 2030. The third pushed the share of electric cars to 70 percent by 2050.

  • In the baseline scenario, road‑related air pollution is expected to cause about 3.2 million deaths by mid‑century.
  • The moderate electric‑vehicle scenario cuts that number to roughly 2.1 million.
  • The aggressive scenario lowers the toll to about 1.5 million, saving nearly 1.7 million lives compared with the baseline.

The report shows that the health gains come from two sources. First, electric cars emit far less particulate matter and nitrogen oxides, which are linked to heart disease and lung problems. Second, quieter electric drivetrains reduce the number of severe crashes caused by sudden acceleration or noisy engines.

Policy makers are urged to grow charging infrastructure, offer purchase incentives and tighten fuel‑efficiency standards for new models. The authors stress that the benefits depend on the electricity mix. If the grid stays heavy on coal, the health gains shrink. A parallel push to grow renewable power would boost the life‑saving impact.

Critics note that the study does not factor in the environmental cost of mining lithium or the challenge of recycling batteries. They also point out that many Indian cities still lack reliable electricity, which could slow adoption. Still, the authors say the numbers give a clear picture of what could be at stake if the country does not act.

Overall, the report makes a strong case that moving the vehicle fleet to electric power is not just an energy issue but a public‑health one. It calls on the central and state governments to act now, before the next decade of growth locks in a higher death toll.
