Indian EV Makers Outperform Tesla and BYD in Energy Efficiency Tests

A recent independent study shows Indian electric‑vehicle producers achieve higher energy efficiency than Tesla and BYD.

Indian electric‑vehicle manufacturers have posted better energy efficiency numbers than both Tesla and BYD, according to a study released this week by the Ministry of Heavy Industries. The finding marks a shift in how the global market views Indian EV design and could reshape buying choices in Europe and North America.

Test methodology

The study measured the amount of energy a vehicle uses to travel 100 kilometres under a standard driving cycle. Researchers used the same lab set‑up for all three brands and kept temperature, load and speed constant. They then compared the results with the official EPA ratings for Tesla models and the WLTP figures for BYD cars.

Key steps in the test were:

  • Charge each vehicle to 100 % and let it rest for one hour.
  • Drive the car on a dynamometer that mimics city and highway conditions.
  • Record the kilowatt‑hours consumed and calculate the kilometres per kilowatt‑hour.

The test also looked at how much energy the onboard heating and cooling systems used, a factor that often skews results in hot or cold climates.

Results and market impact

Indian makers posted an average of 6.2 km per kilowatt‑hour, edging out Tesla's 5.8 km and BYD's 5.5 km. The gap was largest in the city‑driving portion of the cycle, where Indian cars saved up to 12 % more energy than their foreign rivals.

Industry analysts say the results reflect a focus on lightweight chassis, efficient motor control software and better battery thermal management. "Indian firms have built cars that need less power to move the same weight," said Rohan Mehta, a senior analyst at AutoInsights. "They show that a smaller market can still push the envelope on efficiency."

The news could boost export plans for companies like Tata Motors and Mahindra. Both firms have already signed deals to ship EVs to Europe, and the efficiency edge may help them win contracts that require strict energy standards.

For Tesla, the data adds pressure to improve its own battery chemistry and software. The company has announced a new generation of cells that promise higher range, but those updates will not hit the market until late 2025.

BYD, meanwhile, is expanding its plant in Chennai and plans to roll out a new model that claims a 7 % efficiency gain. The company says the Indian market's demand for low‑cost, high‑efficiency cars is driving its research.

Consumer groups welcomed the findings, noting that lower energy use translates to cheaper charging bills. "When a car drinks less power, owners save money and the grid feels less strain," said Priya Singh of the Green Mobility Forum.

While the study focused on mid‑size sedans, manufacturers say they will apply the same design principles to SUVs and vans. If the trend holds, Indian EVs could become a staple on highways far beyond the subcontinent.

Overall, the report shows that Indian engineering can match, and sometimes beat, the best in the world. The next step will be to see if the efficiency edge holds up in real‑world driving over months and years.
