India EV Sales Hit Record 185,000 Units in June 2026

India's electric vehicle sales hit a new monthly record in June 2026, crossing 185,000 units. That is a 22% jump from May and a 34% rise over June last year, according to data from the EVreporter dashboard.

The bulk of the growth came from two-wheelers. E-scooters and e-motorcycles sold 112,000 units, up 28% from the previous month. Ola Electric led the pack with 38,000 units, followed by TVS Motor with 22,000 and Bajaj Auto with 18,000. Ather Energy sold 14,000 units, its best month ever.

Three-wheelers keep climbing

Electric three-wheelers, both passenger rickshaws and cargo carriers, sold 48,000 units in June. That is a 15% month-on-month rise. The category now accounts for nearly 7% of all three-wheelers on Indian roads. State subsidies in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Assam helped push sales, dealers said.

Mahindra & Mahindra's electric three-wheeler Treo posted a 40% sales jump, while Piaggio's Ape E-City grew 22%.

Passenger cars hit a speed bump

Electric passenger car sales fell 8% from May to 18,500 units. Tata Motors sold 8,200 units, down from 9,100 in May. MG Motor sold 3,800 units, and BYD sold 2,900. Industry watchers pointed to confusion over FAME-III subsidy rules, which the government has yet to finalise. Buyers are holding back, waiting for clarity on purchase incentives.

"Customers are asking about the new subsidy but no one knows the exact numbers yet," said a dealer in Pune. "So some are postponing their purchase."

Hyundai sold 1,900 units of its Ioniq 5, while Citroën sold 1,200 of the e-C3. Both models have seen steady demand in smaller cities.

Buses and trucks stay flat

Electric bus sales remained flat at 1,200 units. State transport corporations placed fresh orders, but private operators held back because of high upfront costs. Electric truck sales stayed below 200 units. Most went to last-mile delivery fleets in Delhi and Mumbai.

Charging infrastructure grows

Public charging stations crossed 22,000 across India, up from 18,000 in January. Tata Power added 1,200 stations in June alone. ChargeZone and Statiq each added about 700. The government's PM E-DRIVE scheme has sanctioned 7,800 new chargers for highways and urban clusters, but only 3,200 are operational so far.

"Charger availability is no longer a showstopper in cities," said a Tata Power executive. "But on highways, gaps remain."

Policy logjam

The Ministry of Heavy Industries has not released the final framework for FAME-III, which was expected in April. The draft proposal suggests a lower subsidy per vehicle but a wider range of eligible models. Industry groups have asked for a quick decision. Meanwhile, states are acting on their own. Maharashtra raised its EV subsidy by 10% in June. Tamil Nadu launched a new scheme for electric cargo vehicles.

Karnataka, Gujarat, and Rajasthan have also announced separate state-level incentives, creating a patchwork of rules across the country.

EV sales for the first half of 2026 stand at 1.02 million units, compared to 780,000 in the same period last year. If the current pace holds, India could end the year with 2.2 million EV sales.
