Kia India Teases Two New Electric and Hybrid Models
The automaker has released short video clips hinting at an EV and a hybrid SUV, with a full reveal expected later this year.
Kia India has dropped a pair of teaser videos. They show two new models, one electric, one hybrid. The short clips, posted on the company's social media channels, offer only glimpses of the vehicles' silhouettes and lighting signatures.
The first teaser shows a sleek, low-slung car. Sharp LED daytime running lights cut across the front. The company has not named the model, but it is widely expected to be the EV6, Kia's global electric crossover. The EV6 rides on the brand's dedicated Electric-Global Modular Platform, or E-GMP. It already sells in other markets with a range of over 500 kilometers on a single charge.
The second teaser points to a hybrid. The clip shows the front end of an SUV with a closed grille and a blue accent line. That blue trim often signals electrification on Kia models. The vehicle is likely the new Seltos hybrid, which would mark the first time Kia offers a hybrid powertrain in India. The Seltos is already one of Kia's best-selling models in the country, sold with petrol and diesel engines.
Kia India has not released any technical details. No battery size, no motor output, no fuel economy figures. The company says only that more information will come "soon." Industry sources expect a full launch before the end of 2025.
India's electric vehicle market is still small, EVs made up roughly 2 percent of new car sales last year. But the government wants that number to hit 30 percent by 2030. Automakers are racing to bring affordable electric and hybrid options to the market. Kia's moves come as rivals such as Hyundai, Tata, and MG Motor already sell EVs in the country. Hyundai, Kia's sister brand, launched the Ioniq 5 electric crossover in India last year. Tata sells the Nexon EV, the country's top-selling electric car.
Hybrids occupy a middle ground. They offer better fuel economy than conventional petrol cars but do not need charging infrastructure. Maruti Suzuki leads the hybrid segment in India with the Grand Vitara and Invicto. Toyota sells the Hyryder hybrid. Kia's entry could heat up that competition.
The teasers come at a time when India's auto industry is pushing toward cleaner mobility. The central government has cut goods and services tax on EVs from 12 percent to 5 percent. State governments offer additional registration fee waivers. But high upfront costs and limited charging stations still slow adoption.
Kia India entered the market in 2019 with the Seltos. It now sells five models: the Seltos, Sonet, Carens, Carnival, and EV6. The EV6 is currently imported as a completely built unit, which attracts high import duties. Local assembly of the new electric model could lower its price.
Neither teaser shows the interior or dashboard. Kia has not said whether the hybrid will be a mild hybrid, a full hybrid, or a plug-in hybrid. Those details matter. Mild hybrids offer modest fuel savings. Full hybrids can run on electric power alone at low speeds. Plug-in hybrids can be charged from a wall outlet and offer a short all-electric range.
For now, Kia is keeping quiet. The videos end with the tagline: "New energy. New possibilities." The company has scheduled a press event for next month. That is where the full unveiling is expected.
